World Soil Day Celebration (2023)

ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra organized World Soil Day celebration on 05.12.2023 at Seminar Hall of KVK, Idukki. The theme for world soil day 2023 was “Soil and Water: A Source of Life”. As soil is the ultimate natural supplier of the food we eat, we cannot survive without it. The goals include encouraging people and communities to improve soil health and raising soil awareness among all to ensure healthy ecosystems and human well-being. Our planet’s survival depends on the precious link between soil and water. Over 95 percent of our food originates from these two fundamental resources. Soil water, vital for nutrient absorption by plants, binds our ecosystems together. This symbiotic relationship is the foundation of our agricultural systems. However, in the face of climate change and human activity, our soils are being degraded, putting excessive pressure on our water resources. Erosion disrupts the natural balance, reducing water infiltration and availability for all forms of life. Sustainable soil management practices, such as minimum tillage, crop rotation, organic matter addition, and cover cropping, improve soil health, reduce erosion and pollution, and enhance water infiltration and storage. These practices also preserve soil biodiversity, improve fertility, and contribute to carbon sequestration, playing a crucial role in the fight against climate change. The World Soil Day 2023 and its campaign aim to raise awareness on the importance and relationship between soil and water in achieving sustainable and resilient agrifood systems. In the celebration different fertilizers and variety products were displayed as exhibits by Greenstar fertilizers Company Limited, Valero limited Idukki and ICL India limited. The inaugural programme was started with the welcome speech of Dr. R Marimuthu, senior Scientist and Head, ICAR-KVK(BSS), Idukki. The Programme was presided by Smt. Rachel Skariakutty, Programme Assistant (Lab Technician and Management representative. She pointed to focus attention on the importance of healthy soil and advocating for the sustainable management of soil resources. Soil Test based Soil Health Cards were distributed to the farmers by the officials. The inaugural session was followed with a technical session conducted by Ms. Ashiba A, SMS (Agronomy). The topics on soil health management, balanced use of fertilizers to ensure soil productivity, reclamation of soil acidity and integrated nutrient management were covered during the sessions. Plant Labz Tech, Idukki distributed a micronutrient mixture and bio fertilizer pack to the farmers. Mr. Biju Narayanan, Programme Assistant (Computer) delivered words of gratitude for the celebration.
