On June 05, 2023, Tree planting, World Environment Day celebrations and sapling distribution was also held at ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Idukki campus. Bapooji Sevak Samaj Chairperson Mrs. Reena Chacko presided over World Environment Day celebrations. Mrs. Reena Chacko emphasized in her presidential address that we should conserve trees and forests and try to expand forest areas so as to ensure global ecological balance and climate sustainability. Dr. R Marimuthu, Senior Scientist and Head of KVK Idukki welcomed the dignitaries and the farmers. Rev. Fr. Jacob Mathew inaugurated the Program by lightening the lamp. The slogan of this year's Environment Day is 'Beat Plastic Pollution'. 40 million tons of plastic are produced worldwide every year. Of this, less than 10 percent is recycled. 1.9 crore to 2.3 crore tonnes of plastics end up in water bodies, rivers and oceans. Microplastics, which are small plastic substances that break down from plastic, are not only a threat to the environment, but also to humans. He said in his inaugural speech that farmers should fight against this. After the inauguration Rev. Fr. Jacob Mathew, Chandrathil, distributed various types of tree saplings to the farmers. Best KVK Scientist award winner, Mr. Sudhakar Soundarajan (Subject Matter Specialist (Plant Protection) was honored in the programme. Agriculture Bank Board Member Shri. Edathua Raju, Rtd. Assistant Director of Agriculture, Shri Sibi, Rtd. Assistant Director of Agriculture, Shri George Thomas, Smt. Molly, Harmony Organic Farm, Wayanad, BSS Management Representative, Shri. Shaji Kakkad conveyed his greetings. Representatives of IFFCO Idukki, Israel Chemicals Limited, Idukki and Agri Search Idukki exhibited their products in the event. Mr. Sudhakar Soundarajan (Subject Matter Specialist (Plant Protection)) and Mrs. Manju Jincy Varghese, (Subject Matter Specialist (Soil Science), ICAR-KVK, Idukki) conducted the class on Integrated Fertilizer-Pest-Disease-Control Methods in Cardamom Cultivation. Total about 300 Farmers and 6 dignitaries participated. Pledge was taken by the farmers.
