BESST-HORT - Capacity Building programme on ICM in Cardamom

A one-day capacity building training programme was conducted at ICAR-KVK, Idukki on “Integrated Crop Management in Small cardamom”. The training was supported by Business, Entrepreneurship and Start- up Support through Technology in Horticulture (BESST-HORT) under IIHR-SCSP Scheme 2022-23. The training comprised of 50 SC farmers which was conducted offline. The course coordinator of the training is Dr. Rohini M. R., Scientist, IIHR, Bengaluru. The course Director of the training is Dr. R. Marimuthu, Senior Scientist and Head, ICAR-KVK, Idukki. The training programme started with an inaugural address. The representatives from BESST-HORT under ICAR- IIHR attended the inaugural session virtually. Dr. R. Marimuthu, Senior Scientist and Head, ICAR-KVK, Idukki welcomed everyone present both online and off line. A brief introduction about the Institute and training programme was given by Dr. C.K Narayanan, CEO, BESST-HORT and Principal Scientist, Div. of PHT & AE, Dr. G. Senthi Kumaran, Principal Scientist, Div. Of PHT & AE, Dr. Rohini M.R, Scientist, IIHR, Bengaluru respectively. The Inaugural session was followed by Technical sessions on Integrated Crop Management in Small Cardamom. Soil Testing and its importance were explained to the farmers by Dr. R. Marimuthu, Senior Scientist and Head, ICAR-KVK, Idukki. He stressed on soil health management aspects in Idukki district. He elaborated the methods of soil testing, soil collection and reclamation of problematic soils. The Session on “Deficiencies of different Nutrients and its recommendations in small cardamom” was handled by Ms. Manju Jincy Varghese, Subject Matter Specialist (Soil science). She explained with specimens the different symptoms of nutrient deficiencies in small cardamom. Stress was given on micronutrient deficiencies which is generally reflected as secondary symptoms in plants. The deficiency symptoms identification and its recommendations were explained to the farmers. Mr. Sudhakar. S., Subject Matter Specialist (Plant Protection) handled the session on “Integrated Pest and Disease Management in Small Cardamom”. He stressed on various Pest and Disease attack in small cardamom. He explained the integrated way to control the pest and disease. The recommendation for controlling pest and disease were explained in a very scientific manner. Ms. Ashiba. A., Subject Matter Specialist (Agronomy) handled the session on “Integrated Nutrient management” in a very meticulous and scientific manner. She stressed on Fertilizer application in small cardamom both organic and inorganic. Integrated Nutrient management was explained to the farmers. The one-day training programme came to the end by Valedictory session. Organic inputs were distributed to the SC beneficiaries during the valedictory session. They expressed their valuable feedback of the session.
