Celebration Of 93rd ICAR Foundation Day

93rd ICAR-Foundation day was celebrated at ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (BSS), Idukki at 10.00 am of 16.07.2021. A tree plantation campaign was organized in the KVK campus as part of the celebration. Campaign was inaugurated by Dr. R. Marimuthu, Senior Scientist and Head, ICAR-KVK, Idukki. In his inaugural address he stressed the importance of afforestation to enhance and ensure the balance of ecosystem. He stressed that tree plantation manifolds benefits including, that they release oxygen into the air, absorb unpleasant odours as well as harmful gases such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and sulfur dioxide from the air and purify it, protect us from dangerous ultra-violet rays, provide us with food and the pivotal role played by trees in preventing soil erosion, and maintaining ecological balance to the staff members present. As part of the tree plantation campaign 300 tree saplings mainly, 100 each saplings of avocado, jack and silver oak respectively were planted in the KVK farm. In his concluding remarks he also pointed that, tree plantation is not just something that should be done; instead, it is a necessity, the urgent need of the hour. Planting of trees is especially important to protect our environment against air pollution and to lessen the effects of global warming. To this end, he motivated the staff members to involve actively in tree planting related activities and campaigns. The campaign was followed with an online webinar, where the farmers were made aware on importance of planting trees, soil conservation practices, agroforestry, afforestation, and soil health management practices. 61 farmers participated in the online training.
